Hello out there and welcome to episode number 4 of the higher healths show!
Today, we talk about man boobs a fair bit, so mainly this episode is for the gentleman listeners out there, however, to all of my female listeners it's yet another opportunity to keep your man, boobie free, so stick around and share the good news!
First off you might be thinking, why the hell is he talking about man boobs? What a strange topic to get onto a podcast for. Well, the main reason I want to discuss this one is that the reality is, this is an issue for many men, it's common, and rarely talked about. Bringing to light some of the reasons why we end up with a bit too much jubbly in our chesties, while also shedding a bit of light on how we can avoid this and better yet if we have this particular issue how we might approach getting rid of it. With over 17 million men in the United States alone that have Gynecomastia, the secrets out, we gotta talk a bit about the man titties today. Now, while I may make this topic a bit light. Ultimately I feel for the gents out there that are currently dealing with this problem, and I want to help. First of all, there is entirely nothing to be ashamed about; some men are slightly more predisposed to gynecomastia than others. Therefore it's an issue that may happen because of any number of things that make it so.
I just want to keep it relatively simple for the sake of time on this topic and boil it down to a couple of reasons that we might have just too much sweater meat. The first reason is the most common for most men. We eat and drink ourselves into this position, so primarily through our diet and lifestyle, we create the perfect environment for the man jugs to arrive and settle in.
Diet and exercise, or lack thereof, we begin heading down the road to what they describe in the medical field as gynecomastia and pseudogynecomastia or lipomastia which refers to the presence of fat deposits in the breast area of obese men.
Gynecomastia is by definition, enlargement of the gland tissue of the male breast.
Now, it's very important to distinguish the difference between gynecomastia and pseudogynecomastia, which is difficult because they look the same. Gynecomastia is the most common reason for medical evaluation of the male breast and is the result of the growth of the glandular, or breast tissue. With a few differences between Gynecomastia and Pseudogynecomastia to list, the main difference would be that Gynecomastia is a result of excess estrogen and has now created a gland much like what is found within the female. Whereas in pseudogynecomastia we are dealing with excess fat that has accumulated in the pectoral area behind or around the nipples.
What are the numbers? Well, the Mayo clinic reports that every year over 200,000 American men experience struggle with gynecomastia making it one of the fastest growing surgeries in the U.S. According to stats from The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, 1 out of 3 adults are obese, and 1 out of 20 are considered to be extremely obese. The chest and abdomen are very prone to gaining fat. So translating these statistics, 1 out of 3 adult men will have above normal levels of chest fat, and 1 out of 20 adult men will have extremely high levels of chest fat. So that's 33% of men with some pseudogynecomastia or extra fat in the chest.
These issues are from obesity, hormone changes, prescription drugs, steroids, and excessive use of marijuana.
With gynecomastia, it starts with an abnormal amount of estrogen in the male body that can be caused from a carry-over of estrogen from puberty, or as a side effect of medications or drug abuse amongst other issues from a pre-existing medical condition. Once there is a high level of estrogen circulating, it signals the body to reduce the dominant male hormone testosterone. Estrogen causes the increase in chest fat just like in a female. Thus the body will retain more fat in the chest and stomach areas. To make matters worse, the additional fat secretes an enzyme called aromatase that converts testosterone to estrogen. The additional female hormone estrogen then signals the body to develop feminine features, the most visible of is breast tissue or gynecomastia.
One of the most popular paths to gynecomastia that is worth mentioning is supplementing with steroids. Steroids drastically alter hormone balance, where users can go wrong is in their post cycle therapy. So, if you are going to use steroids be sure to never skip this step, otherwise your fate will most certainly lead to gynecomastia. Ensuring that you take these preventive measures will allow your body to produce natural testosterone much faster, and it will also counter the accelerated estrogen production which will be vital in avoiding gynecomastia.
Ultimately, with the challenges we place on our body to keep testosterone high, if not met then pseudogynecomastia can happen. Without adequate exercise where we actually sweat like a pig, move some weight around and use muscle, we will develop fat. The fat brings on a disruptive crap storm of pectoral fat, low testosterone, and high estrogen. Overall men then have a body composition that they are unsatisfied with.
I truly feel for you gentlemen out there dealing with this, I know that it has an effect, low confidence and self-esteem among a few of those issues.
So with that, how do you address this. First, if it is Gynecomastia, it is a hormonal condition, and shouldn't be confused with oversized breasts or pseudogynecomastia that have formed because of significant weight gain. If this is not clear, head to your doctor to make sure because no amount of exercise or dieting will be able to address this issue, the doc will have to handle this situation through breast reduction surgery. The costs for this seem to range from $3000-$6000.
As for pseudogynecomastia, it's going to all boil down to diet and exercise, you need to drop excess fat off. With a good workout program, you can naturally boost your metabolism by adding lean muscle tissue that hates fat. This will not only help you to lose fat faster, but it will also help you keep it off and maintain a body composition that you desire.
Diet, eating clean, healthy foods is critical. This will help you with having a healthier gut, which allows proper nutrients to fuel your body and alter your hormones again in a direction that will aid in fat reduction. So the next time you eye up that donut, or add sugar and cream to your coffee, drink too much alcohol, or pull up to a fast food joint for your favourite combo meal, think about your titties, or picture the McDonald's hamburglar running away with your testosterone. What do you want that chest to look like? Do you really want them fluffy and soft, or do you want them as hard as a rock?
I'll just leave it at that folks. Get sweating, eat right, and be sure to like, comment, and rate this podcast. I appreciate you as always, and look forward to talking to you soon!
