Coconut and Coffee
I would like a coffee with coconut oil please.
So why all the hype around coffee with coconut? Let's start off with the reason this has taken off so rapidly. Mr. Dave Asprey, founder of Bulletproof coffee is where to start. His business has taken off with the idea of putting grass-fed butter, and MCT oil, or as his brand has it called "brain octane oil" into coffee. Blend that all in together with some high quality organic coffee and you have yourself an amazing brain fueling concoction. Truth be told, I absolutely love it and needed to write about it. Everywhere I've gone over the past 4 years I've done my best to avoid regular coffee because I'm so hooked, and feel so great starting my day with such great healthy fats for my big brain. Hey, if I don't say it's big, no one else will.
Start with the coffee. Make sure it's quality, and organic. Coffee is one of the most highly sprayed crops in the world today with pesticides, and consuming non organic negates any health benefits you may have been shooting for. In fact, those that are a little bit more sensitive to coffee, or are a sensitive to chemicals, herbicides, and pesticides may find a relief of headaches, increased energy, and improved cognitive function to name a few things by switching to organically grown coffee. If using drip coffee, use non- bleached filters. Many of the bright white ones are chlorine-bleached, this chlorine is full of disinfection byproducts like dioxin, and will leach from the filter. Next, grass fed butter. It's higher than grain-fed butter in omega-3 fatty acids, CLA, beta-carotene, vitamin A, vitamin K, vitamin D, vitamin E, and antioxidants. If you don't have grass-fed butter then let's skip the butter, the grain-fed will make a poor tasting coffee, and will lack the health we are looking to add.
And finally, MCT oil. Now, Dave Asprey places a much larger focus on doing MCT oil over coconut oil, and for good reason. However, I recommend doing both, not at the same time, but they both rock, so get it going. MCT's (medium chain triglycerides) give great energy via ketones (the use of fat for energy, and why I'm using the remainder of my coconut oil to grease up my rippling abs) which can be used by the brain. The shorter the chain, the faster the body is able to use them for energy. MCT's with great quality typically have C-8's, as opposed to Coconut oils high concentration of C-12's. Thus, why Mr. Asprey is a big fan of his Brain Octane which has both great quality, and great C-8 quantity. So two thumbs way up there on that stuff. However, some folks aren't there yet, or some folks are not the biggest fans of the taste of MCT oil and that's okay. That's where coconut oil comes into play. Coconut oil tastes amazing in your coffee and still has so many added benefits to enjoy. You can most certainly have it alone with coffee to get things started, and you can also have it added in with your grass-fed source butter. The best though, grass-fed butter, MCT oil, and coconut oil. You are going to feel amazing, and you'll be a brainiac, or at least feel like you will do something real smart all day. The brain will thank you either way, and so will your taste buds.
Just look at these added benefits:
- Improve body composition
- Decrease inflammation
- Improve gut health with healthier gut flora
- Improve metabolism
- protect against mental illness
- Improve memory and brain function
- Amazing source of Antioxidants
- Accelerate fat loss
- Improve exercise performance
- Extra oil to grease up your ridiculously awesome abs
So ditch the crappy coffee, go organic, and think, high quality coffee, high quality me!
